Canton’s Commission for Culture, Arts and Heritage has two committees dedicated to public art:

Public Art Committee

This committee is responsible for the development of Public Art policies and guidelines; establishing and approving parameters for publicly funded Public Art and Exhibition projects; creating and participating in projects that help further public art throughout the community; and assisting with public education. This committee developed policies and guidelines for public art within the community. This information provided the necessary framework to install public art.

Public Art Adjudication Committees

Current projects include the Permanent Sculpture at Ford and Canton Center Roads and the Temporary Art Exhibit along Ford Road. Canton’s Downtown Development Authority has commissioned both projects.

Art Pillars

Sharon Dillenbeck and D & M Studios commissioned artists to paint art pillars during the Canton’s Relay for Life. Various businesses sponsored these pieces at $100 per pillar and participants at the Relay for Life monetarily voted for their favorite pillar. All proceeds were raised for the American Cancer Society. The art pillars were entered into the Liberty Fest 2006 parade and committee members walked along with the float.

Public art helps create a sense of community and is becoming an increasingly important part of Canton’s unique identity. It contributes to neighborhood pride and enlivens the spirit of a place. It also preserves and celebrates our community’s culture, history and heritage, and enhances the quality of life for our residents and visitors.
