Program Overview
Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG) is an entitlement program of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Authorized under Title I of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974, CDBG funds are used to address a wide range of eligible housing and community development activities. The program assists the development of viable communities by providing decent housing, a suitable living environment, and expanding economic opportunities, principally for persons of low and moderate income. The intent of the Annual Action Plan is to identify how Canton will utilize the federal grant funding received from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) during the program year (July 1, 2011 - June 30, 2012) to address the priority needs identified in Canton's Consolidated Plan.
Canton anticipates the following estimated funding from HUD:

Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) $312,164
CDBG funds must be used to address one of three National Objectives:
- Benefit low-to-moderate income persons;
- Prevent or eliminate slums and blighted conditions;
- Meet an urgent need
Canton Township, as an entitlement community with a population over 80,000, receives an annual allocation of CDBG from HUD. The Township re-grants some of these funds to local nonprofit agencies to accomplish community needs as identified in Canton's Consolidated Plan. The Community Development Block Grant Advisory Council reviews applications for these grants and makes funding recommendations to the Board of Trustees. Grant applications are typically due in early December for the following program year (PY).
The Consolidated Plan is a five-year plan that provides a basis and strategy for the use of the City's Federal entitlement funds, including the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG).

The CDBG Advisory Council held a Program Year (PY) 2010 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Public Hearings on March 13, 2011 and May 18, 2011.
The Canton Township Board of Trustees held a Program Year (PY) 2010 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Public Hearing on June 14, 2011.
The public hearings were held pursuant to the Final Rule for Consolidated Submission for Community Planning and Development Programs (24CFR Part 91.105 effective February 6, 1995).
The purpose was to obtain citizens' views and comments on the proposed CDBG budget, which is an estimated $312,164 in funding. PY2011 runs from July 1, 2011 - June 30, 2012.
The proposed PY2011 budget can be obtained during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.in the Finance & Budget Department located at 1150 S. Canton Center, Canton, MI 48188.
