River Day
Event Details
Canton’s Municipal Services Department will hold its annual River Day celebration on Saturday, June 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lower Rouge River Recreational Trailhead, located off Morton Taylor Road and Michigan Avenue.
Planned activities during this FREE family-friendly event include:
Bat House Building: Jack Polhill from the Western Townships Utility Authority will be on hand to help kids of all ages build their very own bat house. Bats play an essential role in pest control, pollinating plants and dispersing seeds. Bat house are helpful in providing alternative roosting habitat for bats that are excluded from homes and in turn, reduces the chance of human contact with bats. All supplies to build a bat house will be provided.
Nature Walks: All participants are invited to explore Canton's Lower Rouge River Recreational Trail which follows along the lower Rouge River from Canton Center Road to the I-275 Metro Trail. Here visitors can commune with nature, while strolling/running/biking on this 12-foot-wide,finely screen limestone path as they pass through scenic woodlands and cross several bridges over the Lower Rouge River. Canoe and Kayak Paddling: New to River Day this year, Motor City Canoe Rental will be providing 8-10 canoes and kayaks free of charge! Canton's Division of Public Works has been working diligently to clear log jams and hanging branches so participants can paddle along a portion of the river and take in the beautiful scenery. Signs will be placed along the trail to direct all paddlers to the launch area.
National Trails Day: This year, River Day will be combined with National Trails Day. National Trails Day is held on the first Saturday in June and recognizes all the incredible benefits federal, state and local trails provide for recreation and exposure nature. Canton's Leisure Services Department is co-hosting the event and will have booths set up by local vendors along the trail system for participants to browse.
Food/Drink: Light refreshments will be served on a first-come, first-served basis.
