Canton hosting first Youth Public Safety Academy

May 15, 2017, Canton, MI – The Canton Public Safety Department is hosting a one-week summer program for teens age 13 to 17 years old, providing a fun, interactive learning experience designed to:

  • Teach students about the daily operations of the police and fire departments, including the philosophy of teamwork
  • Promote a greater understanding between the youth in our community and Canton’s police officers & firefighters
  • Help students develop life skills that promote safe, smart thinking and decision making

Individuals attending this free academy will be educated on the operational procedures of both departments through presentations, demonstrations and hands-on activities.  Students will gain personal knowledge on law enforcement’s role in the criminal justice system, as well as the firefighter’s role of providing emergency services to the community.  Attendees will better understand the training and education required for police officers and firefighters to effectively handle the challenges of their professions.  Attendees will also have the opportunity to become CPR certified.

“The Public Safety Department is excited to host our first youth academy, providing an opportunity to make important connections with teens in our community,” says Public Safety Director Joshua Meier.   “Whether you’re curious about the services provided, or are potentially interested in a career in the field of public safety, this academy will educate participants on the inner workings of the police and fire departments,” Meier adds.

The Youth Academy will be held Monday, June 19 – Friday, 23, 2017, from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Participants will be provided with lunch and will participate in light physical activity every day.

Applicants must be Canton residents, ages 13-17 (as of June 19, 2017), with no criminal history.  Applications will be accepted now through May 31, 2017, and are available for online submission or as a PDF download Public Safety’s homepage link.

Class size is limited—participants meeting the minimum requirements will be randomly selected.  For additional information, please contact Community Relations Officer Patty Esselink at 734/394-5194.
