Canton’s Village Theater to Exhibit Works By Sarmad Al Musawi

A painting by artist Sarmad Al Musawi

The Village Theater at Cherry Hill is pleased to present “Self-Platform,” a special exhibition of paintings and sculptures by artist Sarmad Al Musawi on display now through May 29, 2019. An artist’s reception will be held on May 14, 2019, from 7:30-10:00 p.m., which is free and open to the public.

According to Sarmad, “The human soul has inherited functions and the old savage ways that make us suffer and mourn because we are in a conflict between old ideas and the restrictions that prevent us from being civilized. At the beginning of humankind, we humans were thirsty for power, which led to violence and distrust between the ones with power and the ones with the greater vision to control the rest of humanity.”

Sarmad hails from Baghdad and is a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Baghdad University.  Known for elegant and powerful work, Sarmad has exhibited around the globe in Jordan, Morocco, Sweden, Abu Dhabi, and the United Emirates. This exhibition will be Sarmad’s first solo exhibit in the United States.

Reflecting on exhibit’s central theme Sarmad believes: “The self-platform of the ones being blinded by power. To gain power the controller caused suffrage climbing on people’s ambitions, dreams and emotions. The concept of self is the absolute loyalty that only order keeps you alive. If you want to live, you should have been stripped of everything bearing the concepts and ideas to join the herd and loaded with ideas of the controller.”
