A Watery Kind of Day
Paint, Color, & the Figure
Artist: Jean-Paul Aboudib

Gallery @ VT

"Paint, Color & the Figure"
by Jean-Paul Aboudib

Medium:  Oil, Acrylic, and Graphite

Jean-Paul moved to the United States at a young age from overseas in 1987.  Due to civil unrest and economic strife, his family decided to move to the U.S. in pursuit of a more secure and stable life.  Upon his arrival, he witnessed a life and culture that was grand and diverse which would awe him for years.  He discovered that his potential as an artist would flourish as he witnessed inspiration which ignited his creativity.  “I’ve always had an immense passion for art and considered myself blessed to be able to manifest my creativity”, says Jean-Paul.

In 1997, Jean-Paul decided to pursue his artistic endeavors in an academic capacity.  He earned a scholarship out of high school in the drawing and painting department at The College for Creative Studies located in Detroit Michigan, where he studied under nationally and internationally acclaimed artists.  After earning his BFA, he went on to achieve an MFA in painting from Wayne State University where he turned his attention to the figure.  He fell in love with human form and began investigating the figure as it echoed the authentic testimony of the human pathos.  Influenced by contemporary realist painters such as Jacob Collins, Malcolm Liepke and Victor Wang, his work began exploding with luminous color and a gestural mark inundated with texture and synergy.

Jean-Paul has exhibited his work in various galleries, including the Alden B. Dow Museum, The Forum Gallery at The Cranbrook Academy of Arts, the historic Scarab Club and The Alfred Berkowits Gallery at The University of Michigan.  In addition, he has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors including honorable mentions, merit awards and best in shows in juried art competitions.  In 2011, he was the recipient of the Best in Show award at The Cherry Hill Village Theater and Gallery for the annual state wide juried competition.

Most recently, Jean-Paul was a visiting artist at The Dancing Dog Gallery in Ann Arbor, MI.  He has lectured extensively about his work’s technique and conceptual inspirations at various venues including Madonna University and The Three Cities Art Club.  His art can be found in the collections of the Plymouth Community Arts Council, PCS Global Company and Milano’s high end Men’s Fine Apparel.  He has taught art privately and in various art programs such as D and M Art Studios in Canton, MI and extension art classes in the Dearborn Public School System and has completed several public and private commissions throughout the state of Michigan including a portrait of Mr. Marshall Mathers (Eminem).  Jean-Paul is currently represented by the reputable Artful Home Gallery, an online gallery representing over 1,400 artists across North America.  His work can be viewed at www.artfulhome.com.

Artist Statement: Jean-Paul Aboudib
Born 1979, American Painter

If one looks at his work, one would find an earnest testimony of exploration through the fleeting glimpses of the figure’s truest nature.  Jean-Paul is an artist of intent and purpose.  His vivacious color palette and expressive gestures in his paintings embody a sense of unvarnished human emotion and an unmistakable understanding of the figure.  His work examines the interplay between what the body conceals and reveals.  The work’s focus, in its purest form, illustrates his subject’s intimate and subjective moments of attitude, fear, apprehension, and at times even subtle undertones of their sexuality.  Through the expression of visual elements such as the residual state of emotions in its almost haunting capacity, the falling of light fragments that expose the vulnerability of the flesh, and the articulation of form as it transitions into the softness of receding shadows, he brings the viewer to a closer connection to the subjects.

Perhaps the most sincere attribute of Jean-Paul’s work rests in the gestural spontaneity of his mark making as it homogenizes into the labyrinths of the figure’s most revelatory moments of essence and awareness.  His drawings and paintings embark on the internalization of an individual, exposing the sublime mystery, and yet ordinary truth of the human condition.
