Artist's Statement
Because I have drawn all my life I sometimes think that it is embedded in my DNA. I draw because I feel. For me drawing is the visualization of emotion and this exhibition represents my fifty-year journey doing just that. I have tried drawing with tablets and I don’t enjoy it. I miss the feel of the paper and the materials on my fingers. For me drawing is very tactile and energetic. I love to see the marks, smears, and alterations of the creative process. Sometimes I tell people that I feel like a visual sponge – I absorb everything in my environment and squeeze it out in an artistic expression.

For me the joy of putting marks on a surface is the ultimate reward. The distinction between painting and drawing is frequently blurred in my work and I think of it mostly as drawing. Generally, I am not as concerned with photographic realism as I am about creating an emotional statement. In recent years my work has become smaller in scale, often sketchbook size and more intimate in approach. The viewer is looking more closely at the marks of my improvisation. As I have reached my 70th year my work has become once again more experimental, playful, and joyful..
